Alabama Republican Sen. Richard Shelby has announced his candidacy for governor.
In a statement, the Republican lawmaker called on Republicans to unite in order to defeat the Democrats and “take back our state.”
The statement, made on Wednesday, came as the GOP looks to fend off Democratic Gov.
Robert Bentley’s reelection bid.
The state Senate election is scheduled for November 2018.
Alabama has been solidly blue in the presidential election and Trump lost the state by about 4 points.
Republicans are expected to retake the Senate next year and win a majority of seats in the chamber.
Shelby, who is running for re-election in 2018, was elected to the Senate in 2010.
He won re-elections in 2012 and 2014.
