“We don’t feel like we’re in a race against time, because if you look at what’s happening in America, it’s been going on for a very long time,” Ms Bannister said.
The organisation has recorded more than 3,000 cases of racial discrimination over the past 12 months.
“If we could have done it a year ago, we wouldn’t have been here,” Ms Ngo said.
“But the message we’re sending out is that we need to be more careful.”
She said it was not the first time she had faced racism at the office, but she felt her voice was “getting louder”.
“It’s a big thing, but it’s not something that we feel we have to be afraid of.”
It feels like there are other people in this room who have experience of it, and it feels like it’s the norm for people to be like, ‘oh, you’re a woman’ and ‘oh you’re black’.
“The number of racial complaints in Australia has increased over the last decade, but there has been a steady decline in recent years.
